Identify & Assess
Overview
The first step is to identify the family homeless shelters in your area. Some states have websites that include information for shelters throughout the state- a Google search is another easy way to find them. Your state may have a coalition where shelter directors meet regularly, this is a great opportunity to present the program and make connections.
Making Contact
Once you have made connection with a shelter director, set up an informational call to discuss the program in detail, making sure to emphasize that your only mission is to child-proof- you are not assessing the shelter for anything else. Send the director the pre-assessment form and have them complete and send back prior to the visit. Next step is scheduling the walk-through. This generally takes 30-60 minutes, depending on the size of the shelter. During this visit, you will use the safety checklist as a conversation guide and fill out the questions one at a time. It is helpful to see all kitchens, bathrooms and common areas. Bedrooms are generally set-up the same, so if you can only see one, that is ok. Use the checklist to track items needed by room so you have an accurate count at the conclusion of the visit. Inquire if they have a maintenance person that can help with any carpentry projects that may be needed. We recommend bring a measuring tape and taking pictures, with the shelter director's permission.
