At the Shelter
Overview
Once you have completed your walk-through and identified the necessary safety supplies, it is time for education and installation. There are several different methods for this step and keep in mind, each shelter is different so be ready to adapt!
Education Event
Kick-off the event with a home safety presentation for residents and shelter staff. Explain the importance of home safety and answer any questions they may have. Including an interactive component is helpful to keep everyone engaged. Most shelters have a mandatory meeting for all residents and this is the perfect opportunity to have everyone in the same room. This should be informative but not a lecture- the goal is to make the residents feel empowered! Helpful tips, items to bring as well as talking points and ideas for games can be found in the program manual.
What You’ll Need
Installation
This step can be executed in a variety of ways depending on the size of the shelter, the layout and materials needed. In the past, we've used three different methods, but with COVID restrictions, you can get creative with a hybrid version and utilize zoom. It is important to remember that each shelter is different!
